The first thing that comes to the minds of many who hear the word Peru, is the enigmatic ruins of Machu Picchu. When American Archaeologist Hiram Bingham discovered the former Inca citadel high up in the Andean mountains back in 1911, it had become a densely overgrown, hidden place far away from civilization.
The Citadel of Machu Picchu
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Machu Picchu became a wonder of the world in 2007. Such vibrant harmony between nature and culture is hard to find elswhere. Machu Picchu can only be reached by train or on foot. Surrounded by dense tropical vegetation, the citadel built on a flattened hilltop remained hidden from even the Spanish Conquerors.
